Abstract

The discovery in 1971 by Russian scientists of the membrane mechanism of energy formation in methanogens showed that methane is a product of the energy exchange of methanogens, and its synthesis is associated with the accumulation of energy in the form of a trans-membrane potential due to the functioning of the proton or sodium pump. In 1973, J. Zeikus and R. Wolf described an obligate thermophilic autotrophic hydrogenic methanogen. In 1977, C. Woese, based on the study of the genetic apparatus of an extensive group of methanogens, identified the third separate independent ancient kingdom (Domain) Archaea. In 1991, a hyperthermophilic (up to 110°C) methanogen was isolated from the marine bottom sediments of the Guaymas basin of the Gulf of California. In 2006, astrogeologist J. Casting proposed a hypothesis about the dominating influence of hydrogenic thermophilic and hyperthermophilic methanogens on the evolution of the climate on the primitive Earth in the Archean epoch (3.9 – 2.3 billion years ago) and the formation of water. Based on the above discoveries and hypotheses, a hypothesis is proposed about the influence of hydrogen as a powerful energy promoter on the biological evolution on the Earth. Hydrogen is the main energy element of the solar system, and its production and use will determine the further development of the planet’s energy.
