Education Development Problems from the Viewpoint of Value Priorities
Abstract
Topical problems relating to development of education in Russia are analyzed. Discrepancy between the pragmatically oriented educational policy and modern requirements for the training of specialists in the sector of intellectual labor is shown. Attention is given to various aspects of improving the education quality and to setting up an efficient student-oriented educational environment that would properly consider individual features. The approach to education as a service sector is subjected to criticism in view of its disposition toward curtailing academic freedom and university spirit of scientific development. It is shown that attempts to set up educational environment based on predominantly managerial principles result in that the specialists trained in such environment feature a situation-oriented way of thinking, a narrow range of experience, and weak reflective capabilities. It is incorrect to understand education too narrowly, only as a tool to achieve economic growth. Education should serve not only as an economic development tool. The true objectives of education consist in shaping a creative personality who would find meaning in relating himself or herself to the natural and cultural values rather than pursue the goals of meeting irrational consumer standards. The problem of improving the theoretical and cognitive capabilities of students is highlighted. Experts have long pointed out a worrying trend toward decreasing the intellectual potential of students. The focusing on "useful" tool-like knowledge leads to lower interest in theoretical studies. Theory is perceived as a very complex activity that does not yield an immediate effect, and which does not lead to success in life even in the long run. It is emphasized that the rating-oriented systems for estimating the education quality on the basis of predominantly quantitative approaches are far from being mature from the methodological point of view, and it is pointed out that the humanities and social sciences play an important role in the education of modern engineers.
